How to Measure a Room Before Ordering Furniture

Measure the room and the route into it before settling on a furniture size. A piece needs to work in the layout and reach its final position.

Draw the usable room

Sketch the walls and mark door openings, windows, columns, skirting, switches and fixed storage. Record the width and length at the floor and identify anything that projects into the proposed furniture position. Measure rather than scaling from a photograph.

Measure furniture as a footprint

Record the maximum width, depth and height available for each piece. Mark a proposed footprint with removable tape and walk around it. Include the space used by an open drawer, a pulled-out chair or a recliner where relevant; ask for the actual operating dimensions.

Check access separately

Measure the narrowest clear door opening, corridor turns, staircase width and lift opening. Record lift cabin dimensions and any landings. Ask how the proposed furniture is constructed and whether it can be brought in as separate parts; do not assume it can be dismantled.

Photograph and label the measurements

Take a wide room photograph and separate views of tight access points. Label the sketch with one unit throughout, and distinguish finished room dimensions from an approximate plan. For a Bengaluru apartment, include any building access or delivery-slot restrictions.

Send a useful brief

Share your sketch, room photographs, desired furniture type and reference images. Ask Baithak to confirm the final furniture dimensions, access requirements, specification and delivery arrangements before you approve an order.
